Hagelslag, the beloved Dutch chocolate sprinkles, has an interesting origin story. It was created by a Dutch baker named Gerard de Vries in the early 20th century. Inspired by the Dutch tradition of sprinkling sugar on bread, he innovatively introduced chocolate sprinkles, initially naming them “chocoladehagel” or chocolate hail.

De Vries’ invention gained popularity quickly, and by 1936, hagelslag was being mass-produced by the Dutch company De Ruijter. Today, De Ruijter remains one of the most well-known brands producing hagelslag in various flavors, including milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate, delighting generations of Dutch people and becoming a quintessential part of Dutch breakfasts and snacks.

The boterham met hagelslag, a staple in Dutch cuisine, is more than just a sandwich—it’s a beloved tradition. This simple delight features a slice of bread generously slathered with butter and topped with hagelslag, delightful chocolate sprinkles. It’s a go-to breakfast or snack for many in the Netherlands, loved for its nostalgic taste and ease of preparation. This sweet treat isn’t just a meal; it’s a cultural icon, symbolizing comfort and a touch of childhood joy in every bite.
