Kasteel Montfoort holds a special place in my heart. I was born and raised in Montfoort and the castle has always been a part of my life. As a child, I cycled through the castle gates imagining knights and princesses living there centuries ago. Its small towers, narrow bridge and historic walls felt like something out of a fairytale, and it always sparked my imagination.

Montfoort itself is a charming town with a rich history, located along the Hollandse IJssel in the province of Utrecht. The town was founded in the 12th century and became an important part of the Bishopric of Utrecht. Its location by the river made it a strategic and thriving center for trade and defense.

Power of a bishop in the Netherlands

Around the year 1170, Bishop Godfried van Rhenen ordered the construction of a castle at a strategic location along the Hollandse IJssel. This fortress, later named Kasteel Montfoort, was built to protect the Sticht, the bishop’s territory, from attacks by the counts of Holland. Additionally, the castle served as a base for the bishop to maintain control over the sometimes turbulent city of Utrecht.

The name Montfoort likely comes from the Latin Mons Fortis, meaning “strong hill” or “fortress.” A knight, appointed as the commander of the castle, was given the title burggraaf van Montfoort (castellan of Montfoort) along with lands in the surrounding area. Over time, these castellans grew into powerful lords who played a significant role in the history of the region.

Kasteel Montfoort stood as a symbol of strength and authority, shaping the development of both the town and the surrounding area. Its story is a fascinating part of the rich history of Montfoort and the Hollandse IJssel.

Around the castle, a settlement began to grow, which was granted city rights in 1329. With this new status, Montfoort developed into a fortified town. Walls were built around the city and a moat was added for extra protection.

The city walls of Montfoort included 26 defensive towers, making it a strong and secure place. One of these towers also served as the foundation for a windmill, which stood proudly on the city’s fortifications. This combination of defense and practical use showed how the town made the most of its strategic location and resources.

Montfoort’s walls and towers were a symbol of its strength and independence, playing an important role in its history and growth as a city.

The castle and the city

Over the centuries, the castle’s role evolved. In its early years, it served as a way to guarantee the influence of the Bishop of Utrecht in the area. It was a residence for the ‘burggraaf’ of Montfoort, who played an influential role in the politics of Utrecht and the surrounding areas.

Keizer Karel V bought Kasteel Montfoort in 1545 from Jan de Roover and a century later it was sold to Staten van Utrecht. However, during the invasion of France troops in 1672 the castle was destroyed. The remains of the castle were given to the city of Montfoort.

In 1833 a barding school was established in the castle what became a prison for girls under the age of sixteen in 1859. A reformatory for girls who had committed minor offences was also established. It wasn’t till 1900 that it turned into a National Reformatory, a disciplinary school for girls. It closed in 1968 and was then in the hands of Gemeente Montfoort and in need of a big restoration.

From agriculture to industry and the Knopendraaiers tradition

For centuries, Montfoort was a small town where most activities revolved around agriculture and supporting the surrounding countryside. Rope-making was common, with several ropewalks in the area, but Montfoort became particularly well-known for its button-making industry. This trade became so prominent that the locals earned the nickname Knopendraaiers or “button turners.”

By 1749, records show 34 workers in the button-making trade, known as knopendraaiersknechten. In 1760, Montfoort was home to a factory that produced bone buttons, which were highly sought after across the region. This craft brought fame to the town and became a significant part of its identity.

During the 19th century, another industry emerged: brickmaking. Several brick factories were established near Montfoort, taking advantage of the clay-rich soil in the area. However, this industry eventually declined and the factories disappeared over time.

Despite the changes in industries, the tradition of the Knopendraaiers lives on, especially during Carnival. During this festive season, Montfoort transforms into “Knopengein,” with locals proudly celebrating their button-making heritage. The town’s Carnival features parades, costumes and plenty of laughter, keeping the spirit of the Knopendraaiers alive while honoring Montfoort’s unique history.

Evolution of a Dutch castle

Today, the castle is a vibrant part of the community, used for weddings, events, and gatherings. It’s a place where history meets modern life, and its timeless charm makes it a favorite spot for both locals and visitors.

Growing up, the castle was more than just a piece of history, it was part of our community. I remember school trips where we learned about its past and local events like Sinterklaas or going to the schoolnurse. Now still, residents of Montfoort cycle through the castle gates to reach the towns centre.

The perfect historical weddinglocation

Years later, when it was time to plan my wedding, there was no question about the venue. Saying “I do” in the castle’s beautiful historic setting was like bringing my own story full circle. The warmth of the old walls, the charm of the setting, and the memories of growing up around it made the day even more special.

For me, Kasteel Montfoort isn’t just a landmark; it’s a place woven into my life. From childhood dreams to one of the happiest days of my life, the castle has been there, standing strong and timeless. Its rich history and evolving role, from fortress to residence to community hub, make it a true treasure of Montfoort and the Utrechtse Hollandse IJssel region.
