Sinterklaas in Holland: a time of tradition and magic
In the heart of the Netherlands, the arrival of December heralds the much-anticipated festivity of Sinterklaas. This cherished Dutch tradition brings together communities, families, and friends in a celebration steeped in history and enchantment.
The legend of Sinterklaas
At the core of this jubilant occasion is the revered figure of Sinterklaas, also known as St. Nicholas. According to legend, Sinterklaas is a benevolent, elderly man with a flowing white beard, who arrives in the Netherlands from Spain each year by steamboat, accompanied by his devoted helpers, the “Zwarte Pieten” or Black Petes.
The festive arrival
The excitement builds as Sinterklaas arrives in a grand procession, greeted by throngs of cheering children and families lining the streets. The air buzzes with anticipation, as Sinterklaas, dressed in his traditional red bishop’s attire, parades through towns atop a magnificent white horse.
