Strandhoofden (Groynes) in Zeeland – Guardians of the Coast

Have you ever seen this? Lots of rows of wooden poles on the Dutch seashore stretching into the sea. These are strandhoofden, or groynes and they are crucial in protecting the Zeeland coastline.

The North Sea is powerful, with strong currents and tides that constantly shift sand along the coast. Without protection, beaches would erode much faster. The groynes help by slowing down the flow of water and trapping sand between them, keeping the shoreline stable and the beaches wide.

Groynes have been used for coastal protection in the Netherlands for centuries. In Zeeland, they became especially important after the devastating North Sea floods of the 20th century. Alongside dunes and dikes, these wooden barriers help to safeguard the land against the ever-pushing sea.
