The Haringvliet bridge (Haringvlietbrug) is a drawbridge located in the Netherlands, specifically spanning the Haringvliet estuary between the islands of Voorne-Putten and Goeree-Overflakkee. It is an essential transportation link, carrying both road and water traffic. In the summer of 2023, the bridge was closed for several months for repairs.

The movable part of the Haringvliet Bridge has been thoroughly refurbished. The bridge valve and the movement mechanism, such as the gear track and motors, have been replaced.

In addition, a new, uniform system will be set up for operation, control and monitoring of movable bridges. After renovation, the Haringvliet Bridge will be operated from the Volkerak locks.

Replacing the valve and bridge movement was a complicated operation. First the old valve and the old movement work were lifted out of the bridge. We then installed a new movement mechanism and the bridge valve could be lifted. The technical systems were installed on the bridge. The bridge was then reopened to vehicular traffic.

Finally, the new technical systems had to be adjusted and tested. This requires a number of road closures at night. Once everything was working safely, the bridge reopened to shipping.

Renovation of the permanent part of the Haringvliet Bridge after 2030 The renovation of the fixed part of the bridge has not yet been scheduled. In order to keep this part of the bridge safe and available for traffic in the coming years, Rijkswaterstaat will implement various reinforcement measures in 2023.
