I love this. Watch as this mighty cargo ship glides over the Westerschelde, with the vast North Sea on the horizon and the dunes of Westkapelle in the background. A mix of raw maritime power and serene coastal beauty I think.
The Westerschelde has been a vital shipping route for centuries, connecting the ports of Antwerp and beyond to the open sea. The tides here are strong, shaping the coastline and creating ever-changing views, the ‘strandhoofden’ (Groynes) are working hard to keep a tidal current flowing along the coast away from the coast, preventing this current from creating gullies in front of the beach.
Fun fact: Westkapelle’s dunes aren’t just scenic, they also protect the land from the sea. The area has a rich naval history and remnants of WWII bunkers still overlook the water.
